Canadian army captain accused of shooting severely wounded insurgent
PETAWAWA, Ont. - A Canadian soldier charged with second-degree murder was seen firing his weapon at a severely injured Afghan insurgent - but the body was never recovered, according to documents read into the military court record.
Capt. Robert Semrau, 35, faced his first court appearance Tuesday since being charged Dec. 31 for an offence alleged to have taken place last October in Helmand Province.

Ivanovic, Mauresmo advance to Brisbane quarters
BRISBANE, Australia - Facing two match points and a shock elimination, Ana Ivanovic suddenly rediscovered her game Wednesday to hold off Italy's Roberta Vinci and reach the Brisbane International quarterfinals.
The top-seeded Ivanovic advanced with a 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-1 win over the 82nd-ranked Vinci and next faces former No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo, who endured a marathon three-set win over fellow Frenchwoman Julie Coin.

Word of Alcoa layoffs have North American markets pointing lower layoffs
TORONTO - North American markets appear headed for a lower open Wednesday, sobered by aluminum producer Alcoa Inc.'s decision to slash jobs and production to navigate through the global downturn.
The announcement was a harsh reminder that the economy both domestically and abroad remains in rough shape. Alcoa said late Tuesday it is reducing its global work force by about 13,500, or 13 per cent, by the end of the year and lowering total output by more than 18 per cent annually.

EASTON, Md. - Some lots of a makeup remover that's packaged as a single towelette have tested positive for a bacteria that could cause eye infections, prompting a recall of the product in Canada and the United States.
Celeste Industries Corp. of Easton, Md., has recalled all lots of SimplySmart 'Remove' Makeup Remover, it said in a news release Monday.
